Farmington Valley Quilt Festival 2008 Art, Craft, Tradition October 4th & 5th, 2008 Simsbury, Connecticut

At its most basic, a quilt is two layers of fabric surrounding a layer of batting (also
called filling or wadding) secured with stitching. As you will see through this site and the
Farmington Valley Quilt Festival, this basic definition grossly understates the potential
of the resulting works.
Quilting has a long history of both practical and artistic expression. Reuse of fabric from
worn or outgrown clothing to create warm beddings served practical purposes. Crazy
quilts were often the work of wealthy women using rich fabrics and adornments.
Spectacular art quilts, as exemplified by those of our featured artists, Marilyn Belford
and Barbara Barrick McKie, demonstrate the versatility of the craft.
