Placemats for Meals on Wheels

I hope you all will consider making a placemat or two for the Simsbury Meals on Wheels folks.  One Guild member
mentioned that it is a great way to use up all of those extra blocks that didn’t quite fit into the quilts she has made through
out the years. I have included directions below that are different from last months just to give you more ideas. I will be
collecting placemats at the October 19th Guild Meeting. I will need all placemats by our November 16th meeting.  And
remember, for every placemat that you turn in, you will receive a raffle ticket for a “fabulous prize”. If you have any
questions please feel free to call or email me.

Thanks,

Directions for Placements

Neonatal Quilts

One of the guilds community activities is Neonatal Quilts.  We donate small quilts to hospitals and other organizations for
new babies in need.  We have deliver quilts to UConnn's Neonatal unit on a regular basis and to unwed mothers support
organizations in West Hartford.

As you plan your neonatal quilts for 2011, you can consider some alternative sizes.

Continue to make quilts approximately 24” by 36” (the previous size recommendation) or choose a slightly
larger quilt size of approximately 36” square or 36”by 40”. The nurses shared with us on our visit, that the
larger quilts are a bit more versatile and can be used to cover the babies’ isolettes more effectively, helping
to block out extra light and noise. Please remember that these are approximate sizes only, to use as a
guideline in planning your quilts.

All quilts, small or larger are greatly appreciated !
This is a great opportunity to get rid of some of your stash (so you can replace it, of course) or practice you
machine quilting (the quilts are the perfect size for machine quilting.)
ABC Quilts

Each year the Farmington Valley Quilters Guild presents a handmade quilt to each new incoming
ABC student in Simsbury.  It is given as a special welcome to the community and hopefully as a
happy reminder of their time spent in the Farmington Valley area.  Everyone in the guild has a
chance to participate in this worthwhile project by making a square for the quilt or contributing
non-feminine fabric to the ABC stash.  The ABC committee comes up with the pattern, sews the
top together and quilts and binds the quilt.  This program was started as a Guild community
project by Bonnie Llopis when she was President of the Guild.

The Simsbury A Better Chance (ABC) program is an academic program, established in 1974,
whose mission is to increase the number of well-educated minority youth in society.  The ABC
program enables high-achieving minority students from disadvantaged school districts to attend
Simsbury High School.  During the school year, they live in a boarding house in town, supervised
by resident directors and a tutor.  They also receive support from a local host family.  Simsbury’s
program is open to males.  This program is affiliated with the A Better Chance  Inc., a national,
non-profit academic program that has been serving high school students (both male and female)
from all over the country since 1963.
