MONTHLY MEETING—Wednesday, February 17th
This is Our Annual ABC & Neonatal Quilt Night

One of our service projects is making quilts for the new ABC students each year. We will be
cutting fabric and assembling kits for the third (and last!) ABC quilt for this year. So please come
and bring rotary cutters, mats, rulers and energy for cutting. The ABC committee will supply
the fabric, pattern and Ziploc baggies for each square, along with the sewing directions.
Speaking of fabric, we could use more donated fabric for ABC supplies. We use traditional colors,
blue, red, green, beige, and nonfeminine prints (i.e.no flowers). So if you find appropriate fabric
in your stash or quilt store please bring it to the February meeting. If you can‟t make it to the
meeting, Sue Trimble will take ABC fabric donations anytime.

Our other service project is Neonatal quilts. At the meeting, we will have handouts of one or two
simple patterns that work up quickly into neonatal quilts. We also have a small stash of fabric.
Please bring a rotary cutter, mat, and ruler to the meeting so we can cut up this fabric. If
anyone has fabric they would like to donate, we will be happy to have it. Also, if anyone has
fabric to spare but not too much time, one person could cut up the fabric making a kit and
someone else could take it home to construct. We are desperately looking for new labels to sew
on the neonatal quilts. If you have ever sewn on even one of the labels we use now, you know
why we need something else. If you have any suggestions, please see Donna Dellacamera or
Kathy Lettieri. If you have not yet received the pin for your name tag for making a neo-natal
quilt, please see Kathy Lettieri.

WEDNESDAY, March 17th
George Siciliano Trunk Show: ―This Guy Must Be Nuts‖

Workshop, Thursday March 18

Twirling Logs‖at Canton Senior Center

George Siciliano and his wife, Virginia, teach and lecture about miniature quilts. He is sought
after by many quilt guilds around the country to teach and demonstrate his unique techniques.
He makes the construction of a “miniature masterpiece” very doable and fun. Virginia has been
quilting for 20 years. She uses traditional patterns in unique ways, and has a wonderful sense of
color. They will present a trunk show at the membership meeting on Wednesday, March 17
entitled “This Guy Must Be Nuts.” On Thursday, March 18 they will lead a workshop: “Twirling
Logs.” This is not a miniature quilt block.(7”) The block is an original design with origins in the
“twisted log cabin”. He will show us how to draft this wonderful block without being an engineer!
The charge for the workshop is $45, including the kit. This is a correction to the amount
reported in the December newsletter. The workshop will be held from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm at
the Canton Senior Center. George and Virginia‟s work can be viewed at their web site,
Georgesiciliano.com. Signups will continue at the February membership meeting. The kit
includes all the fabric supplies attendees will need. You need only bring your sewing machine,
thread, a cutting board and a 12 inch ruler. Extra extension cords, irons and ironing boards are
always welcome.

Basting Day March 20th

In honor of National Quilting Day, our guild is having a basting day on March 20th at the
Avon Public Library. We will be layering and basting 4 quilts to prepare them for hand or
regular sewing machine quilting. Please contact Diane Calkin if you are interested in
having your quilt basted. We will accept reservations on a first come basis.
Email dlcalkin@comcast.net
Phone 860-658-7215
We also encourage volunteers to help with the basting.
Please bring your lunch and be part of a fun day of quilting and friendship.
Please prepare your quilt ahead of time:
Quilt top and backing should have the center of each side, top & bottom marked with a
safety pin.
Width and length of quilt top should be measured, written down and pinned to quilt top.
For hand quilting, thread basting is used. Curved needles and thread will be available.
For machine quilt, curved safety pins are used. If that is your preference, please bring
your own safety pins. You will need enough to cover the quilt with pins spaced about 4
inches apart.

Joanne will present a lecture and trunk show, “Magnificent Seven”, at the membership meeting

Shibori Dyeing‖

Workshop-May20th
Picture Perfect Piecing at the Apple Barn, Simsbury

Carol Anne Grotian combines West and East, American quilting and Japanese shibori dyeing to
create landscapes. Indigo quilts focus less on a sense of place and more on shibori itself,
concentrating on the essence of nature. She will lecture on Shibori Dyeing in her lecture on
Wednesday, May 19, 2010. She will then lead us in a workshop on May 20: Picture Perfect
Piecing. That workshop will be held from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm at the Apple Barn in Simsbury.
Her work can be viewed at her web site at carolannegrotian.com. The charge for the workshop
is $35. There may be an additional charge for material by Ms. Grotian. Signups will begin at the
January membership meeting. The supply list will be distributed to attendees in early March.
